The greatest and most visible challenge for law enforcement officers is that presented by drug-related crime; this has led police departments to explore new approaches to their mission.
Abstract
These changes have spawned a whole range of police management issues such as police leadership and organization. Police chiefs tend to stay in their jobs longer and have more education and background in law enforcement. Consolidation of the services of small problems, faces several valid impediments. New approaches to accomplishing the police mission include community-based or "problem-oriented" policing, which has found many supporters as police focus their efforts on eradicating problems in the community rather than reacting to their symptoms. Two articles in this section take opposing sides in the debate on the wisdom, efficacy, and practicality of legalizing illicit drugs. The third section of the book deals with issues of professional police standards, accreditation, and policies. The final section, on police personnel and training issues, covers supervisory training, alienation and burnout, and drug use among police officers. Chapter references.
