This report presents statistical data about felons and non-felons under the jurisdiction of the California Department of Corrections (CDC).
Abstract
The total department population and movements into and out of the institutions and parole regions during calendar year 1988 are summarized. Characteristics of felons newly received from court, including offense categories, racial and ethnic groups, age groups, county and area of admission, marital status, and drug and alcohol history are examined. The third section covers characteristics of the institution population on December 31, 1988. The illegal or prohibited behavior of inmates in CDC institutions, such as number and rate of incidents and escapes, fatal and non-fatal assaults on staff with and without weapons, and assaults on inmates is described. A summary of parolee characteristics is presented, as are parole movements (received and released). The final chapter looks at other populations under CDC jurisdiction: the Civil Narcotic Addict Program, the County Diagnostic Cases, the Community Based Programs, Inmates on Death Row, and Parolees at Large. The report includes six glossaries. 41 tables.
