The survey solicited information on the extent to which crime prevention is a priority for municipal governments, the types of crime prevention structures currently in place, and the types of crime prevention activities attempted. A response rate of 41 percent was achieved in the survey. The responses indicate that municipal governments have a high level of interest and involvement in crime prevention initiatives. The majority of such activities are initiated and organized by the police and focus primarily on opportunity reduction or public education. There are few broad-based, European-style crime prevention councils in Canada. Crime prevention through a social-development strategy is not part of policy and practice in Canada. Issues that should be addressed in research are whether crime prevention and crime prevention councils are effective and whether crime prevention councils constitute the best vehicle for advancing crime prevention through social development strategies in Canada. 3 references.
