This teacher's manual for use in a classroom program designed to prevent alcohol abuse contains background information, teaching tips, suggested student activities, and resources for additional information and assistance.
Abstract
Background information covers the scope of the problem of juvenile alcohol abuse, signs of alcohol abuse, causes of juvenile alcohol abuse, and how to help a juvenile alcohol abuser. The mini-teaching guide provided is designed to accompany the "Be Smart! Don't Start!" children's book. For each session, the guide contains concepts, background, discussion topics and questions, and suggestions for classroom activities. Also included are two reproducible teaching masters. Some of the concepts communicated through the sessions are that alcohol is harmful to the brain and the body; that many people do not feel it is "cool" to drink; some kids start drinking because their friends do it; that there are many ways to have fun without drinking; and that it is okay to refuse to drink even if your friends are drinking.
