Key components of the program are updated parent telephone numbers and teachers' submission of the names of children with unexplained absences after roll call each morning. This list of student names is given to the assigned staff member or volunteer, who matches it to any absences explained by parents on the school telephone machine. The parents of any children left on the list as unexplained absences are then called. If the parent is not aware of a child's absence, the parent is asked to check all places the child may have gone and is then asked to call the police if the child is not located. A successful program requires full support from school staff and parents.
