Presentations on defining and understanding violence review violent crime in Canada, the United States, and Europe; victimization survey findings on the incidence, risks, and fear of crime; and mass media portrayals of violence. Papers on the causes of violence focus on the biological perspective, the sociopolitical perspective, the sociolegal perspective, and the social psychological perspective. Other topics related to violence causes are the relationship of alcohol and drugs to violence, and the impact of nutrition on violent behavior. The types of violence examined include sexual assault, violence in correctional institutions, violent female behavior, family violence, abuse of the elderly, homicide, suicide, terrorism, drunk driving, and child sexual abuse. Other topics covered are treatment of the violent juvenile offender, victims of violence, approaches to preventing and treating violence, treatment limits, public perceptions of violence, and emerging trends in addressing violence in correctional institutions and through police efforts.
