Abstract
The 290 entries in this political dictionary include brief definitions as well as the historical roots and contemporary meaning of each concept. The items are categorized into subject-matter chapters similar to topics covered in most leading textbooks: Federal and State constitutions; intergovernmental relations; parties and elections; legislative branch; executive branch; judicial branch; bureaucracy and civil service; counties, districts, and towns and townships; cities and metropolitan areas; financing State and local government; and citizen needs and government policy. Most entries include extensive cross-references. The book's format lends itself to several applications: a dictionary and reference guide; a study guide for introductory courses in intergovernmental relations; a textbook supplement; a source of review material for political science majors; and a social science aid for use in business, education, government, and journalism.
