The symposium had four general purposes. The first was to present and consider some current examples of research in policing involving a number of disciplines such as sociology, psychology, political science, business administration, criminology, and urban planning. The second was to promote and encourage communication between senior police executives and researchers in various disciplines. Misunderstandings and barriers to communication would be alleviated through understanding and cooperation. The third was to encourage sound, scientifically-based police research in Canada. The final purpose was to attempt to identify and discuss areas in which needs and demands for research are growing. The symposium fulfilled all these purposes and promoted a greater sense of understanding of what research involves and how different parties view the process.
