These seven papers examine the medical, psychological, social, legal, and ethical issues confronting children with AIDS and their families.
Abstract
A medical overview explains the demographics, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of pediatric AIDS. A discussion of the needs of children who test positive for HIV, their families, and their communities uses findings from model programs in Miami, Los Angeles, and New York City. AIDS and HIV infection in children with hemophilia are discussed in terms of their history, psychosocial effects, and clinical interventions. Further papers focus on the development of school policies regarding children with AIDS, strategies that can be used by public schools to provide information and education to children and adolescents about the prevention of AIDS and the promotion of healthier lives, and prevention programs directed at high-risk pregnant women and adolescents. Legal, ethical, and policy issues related to pediatric AIDS research are also examined. Chapter reference lists, author biographies, index, and appended American Psychological Association Policy on AIDS education.
