It urges that information about the transmission and prevention of AIDS be incorporated into school curricula in conjunction with programs on sexuality, drug use, health, and family issues. This education should also be provided at the earliest grade possible and in a manner appropriate to the child's level of intellectual, emotional, and social development. Priority should be given to culturally and linguistically appropriate prevention, and education efforts should be targeted at black, Hispanic, and native American youths. The education should include clear and accurate information about sexual behaviors and the sharing of needles and syringes. Finally, government and private sources should provide increased funding for research and evaluation related to AIDS education and risk reduction. The APA urges its members to provide their expertise to develop, conduct, and evaluate AIDS education and risk-reduction programs.
