In recent years the weapons available to international terrorists and revolutionaries have greatly increased their destructive capability, despite the decline in the media coverage of terrorist activity and the resulting public impression that the terrorist threat may have decreased.
Abstract
In addition, weapons manufactured by the Soviets and Chinese are no longer the main commodity of illicit arms dealers. Instead, their clients are increasingly insisting on modern equipment manufactured in Western nations. As a result, terrorists can change their tactics and achieve more lethal results. Weapons now available to terrorists include Stinger surface-to-air missiles, many other types of surface-to-air missiles, submachine guns, antitank weapons, and others. Anyone with sufficient money can purchase these and other sophisticated military weapons and equipment. However, the numbers of these weapons now owned by terrorists are unknown.
