The guidelines emphasize the need to establish an atmosphere in which people can act nonviolently to resolve conflict. The five elements that contribute to such an atmosphere are affirmation; the sharing of feelings, information, and experience; a supportive community; practice at problemsolving; and enjoyment of life. Among the skills children need to learn to resolve conflicts are listening, learning useful phrases, talking clearly, breaking tension with physical activity, using role-playing and puppets to try different solutions and gain insight, and listing possible solutions.
