This manual is intended for use by educators and others who want to teach children the skills necessary to resolve conflict without resorting to violence.
Abstract
The guidelines emphasize the need to establish an atmosphere in which people can act nonviolently to resolve conflict. The five elements that contribute to such an atmosphere are affirmation; the sharing of feelings, information, and experience; a supportive community; practice at problemsolving; and enjoyment of life. Among the skills children need to learn to resolve conflicts are listening, learning useful phrases, talking clearly, breaking tension with physical activity, using role-playing and puppets to try different solutions and gain insight, and listing possible solutions. Instructions for cooperative games and activities for children and adults, suggested changes in traditional competitive games, activities for preschoolers, index, checklists, and lists of resources.
