The current research program emphasizes the following five areas: 1) drug abuse treatment and prevention as HIV control measures, 2) alternative HIV control measures, 3) other research related to AIDS and drug abuse, 4) surveillance, and 5) technology transfer and communication. The research results to date have indicated the need for repeated and prolonged drug abuse treatment for many drug abusers, the lack of adequate treatment capacity, and the importance of using a variety of approaches in prevention efforts. NIDA has also established a national hotline telephone service to provide information on the availability of drug abuse treatment services. NIDA is currently making plans to build on these and other findings and to develop new initiatives in the area of HIV infection and AIDS.
