The description for each program, arranged alphabetically by state, identifies the program director, start-up date, the community served, annual budget and funding sources, caseload and case dispositions, referral sources, staff and training, program procedures, and public relations. At the time of the 1987-88 directory, few center budgets exceeded $100,000. Budgets in 1990 were reported to be between $100,000 and $200,000 for 56 programs, between $200,000 and $500,000 for 37 programs, and over $500,000 for 16 programs. As in the past, volunteers and lay persons (51.2 percent) served as the primary source of mediators and arbitrators. The number of social service professionals working in this capacity decreased. In a few instances, there were changes in major case concentrations. For example, 66 programs indicated in 1987-88 that they mediated domestic violence cases, but only 16 programs identified such involvement in 1990. Courts, law enforcement offices, and community agencies continue to be the major referral sources. Almost 80 percent of the programs serve population areas of 100,000 or more.
