Participants included Canadian correctional officials, representatives of the private sector, and resource people from both Canada and the United States. Participants agreed that joint ventures offer many potential benefits, but that careful planning is crucial to a program's success. Collaboration among correctional officials, the prison's staff and inmates, the private enterprise partner, and society as a whole is essential. Factors that should be considered during the planning process include the potential need for statutory authorization, eligibility criteria for inmate participation, pay disbursement, feasibility, staff training, and program evaluation. A list of seminar participants and companies that currently are involved in joint ventures in the United States is included.
