The lack of misbehavior training in regular teacher preparation, the high referral rate of problem behavior students to special education courses, and the inadequate guidance given to correctional and special educators to train other teachers in systematic approaches to discipline are factors indicating the need for behavior management training that focuses on general techniques applicable to all students.
Abstract
The first component of effective behavior modification, preventive planning techniques, or alternative management strategies includes attention and approval, teacher movement, classroom rules, instructional planning, modeling, and praise for students who behave well. Anticipatory response techniques support preventive planning and include proximity control, vicarious attention and approval, signal interference, voice control, rule reminder, and probing. The final step, systematic intervention techniques, consists of teacher assertiveness and use of logical consequences for a student's failure to respond. 5 references. (Author abstract modified)
