Types of computer systems used in criminal justice as well as obstacles to the use of computers in the agency are examined. Database applications are analyzed including police analysis, prosecution management, small police department management, court docketing, traffic and district court systems, and various background checking systems. Examples of database and bulletin board systems are discussed. Analysis applications are emphasized. Microcomputers are seen as being attractive for handling small databases by small numbers of users. They are not meant to be replacements for mainframe systems. Mainframes would still be utilized for large databases and telecommunications needs. The benefits and costs of microcomputer utilization are examined with emphasis placed on encouraging agencies to perform cost-benefit analyses before devoting resources to microcomputer applications. The conditions under which initial resource outlay in conjunction with training costs would make computer applications undesirable are reviewed. 26 references.
