One of the most important responsibilities of security professionals is to assure the personal security of all employees of an organization.
Abstract
The events that compromise an individual's security have a direct impact on the organization's ability to accomplish its mission; the results of crime include time away from work, lost production, disruption of family and business life, and possibly permanent physical and psychological damage. An employee education program stressing the principles of physical security can increase productivity, efficiency, and mission effectiveness. The traditional approach to physical security, which was comprised of a checklist of specific do's and don'ts, is ineffective because it does not allow the individual to understand the dynamics of physical confrontation. An effective physical security program is composed of avoidance and response elements. Four principles can be used as a framework for conducting personal security training: increase one's awareness, lower one's profile, take action to avoid potentially dangerous situations, and respond properly if confronted.
