Three booklets discuss policy, curriculum, and the development of community consensus for a school drug prevention program involving students in kindergarten through the 12th grade.
Abstract
The book on "policy" describes how to construct and implement a school drug policy. It explains why a school needs a drug policy, how to compose such a policy, and how to enforce it consistently. Curriculum requirements; the law enforcement role; and suspension, expulsion, and intervention procedures are some of the key policy issues addressed. The "curriculum" booklet describes age-appropriate learning activities for students K-12. Planned learning outcomes through the curriculum are verbal mediation, pleasure management, health appreciation, and making distinctions. At every grade level children will be instructed about the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other illegal drugs. The booklet on "community consensus" outlines how parent groups, businesses, religious institutions, civic organizations, medical professionals, the media, and other members of the community can reinforce the drug-free message.
