This volume consolidates recommendations of a joint Home Office/Association of Chief Police Officers working group on the administration of the Firearms Acts of 1968, 1982, and 1988 in the United Kingdom.
Abstract
The recommendations and guidelines are intended to provide practical guidance to police officers on the proper and efficient administration of firearms controls and to ensure consistency of practice between police forces where appropriate. The Firearms Acts provide for the manufacturer or possession of and transactions relating to certain classes of firearms and ammunition to be confined to "fit and proper" persons. The acts restrict the carrying of firearms in public places and the possession and use of firearms by youth under 17 years of age. Guidance to the police in implementing these acts focuses on the possession, handling, and distribution of firearms and ammunition; exemptions from requirements to hold a firearms certificate; children and young persons; firearms certificate procedures; shotgun certificate procedures; procedures for the registration of firearms dealers; firearms licenses for museums; rifle and pistol clubs; and the criminal use of firearms and law enforcement. Appendixes contain additional information on firearms certification, registration, and deactivation.
