The Atlanta Partnership of Business and Education, a private, nonprofit corporation, is an umbrella organization that coordinates a range of activities aimed at strengthening education in Atlanta's public schools.
Abstract
There are over 300 business members in the partnership and a wide range of affiliated civic, educational, and religious organizations. Partnership activities focused on six areas during the 1985-1986 academic year: Adopt A School Program, in which individual schools and businesses are paired; Distinguished Scholars/Humanities Program which supports cooperative programs between university faculty and teachers in the school district; institutionalization to promote school and business partnerships; technology; volunteer/tutorial activities; and affirmative action. The partnership has provided a mechanism to channel the business community's growing interest in public education and has been responsible for receiving and disbursing funds from local and national sources for programs that link business and other community sectors with schools. Atlanta's collaborative effort has raised expectations because it is one of the few efforts to provide a single focus for coordinating communitywide efforts. Whether the partnership positively impacts the quality of education in Atlanta schools has not been precisely determined, although the partnership has helped make schools a concern of the entire community.
