This report presents data for 1980-89 on crimes, arrests, adult felony arrest dispositions, and the juvenile justice system in California.
Abstract
Reported California Crime Index offenses decreased by 12.6 percent during the decade and increased 3.4 percent from 1988 to 1989. In 1989, violent crimes accounted for 28.6 percent of the 992,555 index offenses reported. The violent crime rate has increased 10.7 percent since 1980, while the property crime rate has declined 19.3 percent in the same period. The total arrest rate has increased 9.87 percent, with arrests for felony drug law violations more than doubling. Sentences to probation with jail have increased by 14.6 percentage points and now account for 61.9 percent of the sentences. Figures and tables.
