Out of 1,000 randomly selected cases from Dauphin and Eire Counties, 273 respondents completed and returned the survey questionnaires. How a respondent rated his juvenile probation department experiences in retrospect, and whether a respondent in retrospect considered himself a delinquent or criminal before or after first contact with the juvenile probation department did not significantly affect the adult outcome. However, the findings showed that first contact with the juvenile probation department either reduced or increased adult convictions. Thus, first contact with the juvenile probation department can serve as a predictor of adult outcome as well as cause a decrease in adult convictions. 6 survey questions and results and 16 references.
