The article documents some of the difficulties faced by critical criminology researchers who seek and sometimes obtain Ministry funds. The politically conservative nature of most government-funded research is underlined as well as the compromises that are made by criminologists who accept State sponsorship of their research. The case is presented that government policy directions and the government's methods of funding criminological research have significant effects on the types of research that are conducted in Canada. 30 references.
