This article focuses primarily on court clerks, who are often portrayed as neutral arbiters of court proceedings. The view presented here questions this portrayal.
Abstract
It argues that court clerks have both formal and informal power which is exercised both inside and outside the courtroom. The article also shows how court clerks perceive each other. It is argued that court clerks have for too long been ignored by criminologists and court workers alike and should become a legitimate focus of research interest. 1 table, 15 references, and 1 appendix.
