Crime statistics for 1988-1989 in Virginia are presented.
Abstract
There were 256,802 serious crimes reported; 27.8 percent of these offenses were cleared. The crime rate was established at 4269.29 Part I offenses for every 100,000 inhabitants. Ten percent of the 391,503 arrests made involved persons under 18. The value of property stolen amounted to $222,597,613; 44.4 percent was recovered. The theft of jewelry and precious metals accounted for a substantial value of property loss, amounting to $18,878,636. Firearms were used in 66.9 percent of all murder/nonnegligent manslaughter cases reported. All other weapons made up an additional 33.1 percent. Over ten thousand aggravated assaults were reported. Of these, 30.9 percent were committed by the use of hands, fists, or feet. Residential burglaries accounted for 64 percent of all burglaries reported; 34.7 percent of these were committed at night. Over 18,000 motor vehicle thefts were reported or a total value loss of $111,911,694. Three law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty. There were 1,808 assaults on officers reported; 97.7 percent were cleared.
