In this victim impact program, the victim usually completes some type of standard form to communicate the medical, financial, and emotional impact of the crime. Although the victim impact statement is provided legislatively by 48 states and the Federal government, a paucity of research exists regarding its effectiveness. The probation officer can ensure the victim benefits from this program by informing the victim about the existence of the statement program, related procedures, and local policies; by encouraging the victim's participation in the program; and by offering assistance to the victim in preparing the statement. Probation officers can examine methods for obtaining victim impact, can coordinate the victim impact process in the community with victim assistance programs, and can initiate staff training on issues surrounding criminal victimization.
