Police have begun to re-evaluate their problems and needs: for professionalism and restraint; ways to control the stresses that all too often lead into alcoholism, family problems, and suicide; mechanisms to train recruits in the changing attitudes and legal frameworks of American society; productivity; and the application of general management principles. As a result of occupational stress, police have a high incidence of alcoholism, broken marriages, domestic violence, and suicides. The public should be made more aware of the problems of police officers and how they can help.
