The most common theme in suicide-related litigation is liability; most lawsuits that seek compensation for suicide are settled out of court. Court decisions have also addressed the use of physical restraints, staff training, and negligent supervision. The literature review revealed that inmate suicide is a major problem in the United States and other countries, that different authors present sharply differing profiles of typical suicide victims, and that most authors agree on crucial measures needed to prevent suicide. The prisoner suicide inventory provides a comprehensive inventory for use by managers in determining the corrective actions needed to reduce the risk of inmate suicide. Preventive measures should focus on personnel selection and retention, staff training, the provision of supportive human services to facility staff and inmates, diversion and referral services, intake and admission practices, the physical plant, and several other areas.
