This 1989 manual outlines standards for small juvenile detention centers in the United States that were developed based on comments and inputs from 63 detention centers throughout the country.
Abstract
A survey by the American Correctional Association indicates that roughly 80 percent of juvenile detention centers have less than 20 residents. Standards have been developed for these small detention centers to help them complete the accreditation process, to enhance the professional level of services, and to improve the care provided to juvenile offenders. The standards cover the administration, organization, and management of juvenile corrections, as well as fiscal management, personnel, training, and staff development. The standards also pertain to juvenile records, physical plants, safety and emergency procedures, security and control, food service, sanitation and hygiene, medical and health care services, juvenile rights, rules and discipline, intake, admission procedures, programs, communication (mail, visitation, and telephones), release preparation and transfer programs, and citizen and volunteer involvement.
