The juvenile section of circuit courts in Wisconsin's 72 counties has exclusive jurisdiction over matters involving delinquency, civil law and ordinance violations, and children in need of protection and services (CHIPS). CHIPS cases are those involving abuse, neglect, dependency, and truancy. Juvenile courts also have exclusive jurisdiction over the termination of parental rights, guardianship, adoption, mental health, and special proceedings. As part of the juvenile court statistical reporting system, data are collected at the time of juvenile case filing and on case activities and disposition. Information is obtained on demographics, offense, hearings, disposition, and postdisposition placement and revision. Data are sent to the Director of State Courts on a weekly basis, and data files are sent to the National Juvenile Court Data Archive in Pittsburgh. The user's guide to archive files explains how to access data according to such variables as county, case number, year of petition, referral statute, date of birth, sex, race, date of court activity, most serious offense, and disposition.
