Other demographic factors that are associated with high crimes rates are a high share of people living in metropolitan areas, a heterogeneous population, and a large share of young people. Drug use is also related to criminal activity, not because it causes crime but because the business part of the drug trade causes violence. Businesses should consider local crime rates along with other factors such as the local economy, the labor force, and the schools; they can obtain police statistics from municipal, county, and State police officials. On a national scale, businesses can obtain the FBI's Uniform Crime Report or the National Crime Survey and include them in the site selection process. A further source of information of the Rand McNally "Places Rated Almanac," which ranks the safety of the nation's 333 metropolitan areas using both the violent crime and the property crime rates.
