The addition of probation services while an offender is in prison is known as the throughcare concept. It requires that the offender be under the supervision of the probation service prior to, during, and after incarceration. A description and critique of the role of the British prison-probation officer is provided from observations, prison interviews, and official documents. The sharing of information about prisoners' daily activities and concerns and the effort to create and maintain a productive working environment between guard and probation officer were two of the most visible consequences of prison-guard prison probation officer contact. Obstacles included conflicts over the role of the probation officer and structural constraints as well as the need for additional training. 7 references (Author abstract modified)
