The Groves Conference on Marriage and the Family, begun in 1934, held a conference in London, England in 1986 on victimization and empowerment and the family. This collection of seven papers address the dynamics of victimization and its impact on victims and family members; short- and long-term intervention and treatment strategies; and an agenda for research, practice, and reform.
Abstract
The first definitional essay describes family victimization and its relationship to individual victimization and suggests therapeutic strategies for recovery. The following four papers discuss common family life cycle victimization issues including child sexual abuse, child physical and emotional abuse, and abuse of elderly relatives. Coping with victimization by female rape survivors, their husbands or male partners, and their parents is examined in a separate paper. The final chapter describes the intervention and treatment approaches used at the International Rehabilitation and Research Center in Copenhagen which helps victims of torture to cope and recover.
