The South Iowa Area Lawsuit Avoidance Project is an example of risk management in the detention and corrections setting.
Abstract
Project objectives are to improve the management accountability, operations, and facilities of county jails; to reduce liability exposure; to minimize lawsuits, and to protect insurability. Project components include risk management, legal, investigative, and audit services. In detention and corrections, risk management necessarily includes a strong emphasis on understanding the organization's liability and employing techniques to reduce liability. Liability involves negligent hiring, retention, assignment, and entrustment as well as failure to direct, supervise, and train. Principal strategies for controlling risk in detention and correctional facilities focus on avoiding exposure, preventing or reducing loss, segregating exposure, contractual transfer, and financing risk. An understanding of private sector approaches to risk management and an awareness of liability exposure are needed in the public corrections setting. 2 tables
