This report on Phase III of the National Pretrial Reporting Program pertains to data collection on the case processing of 11,063 felony defendants from a sample of 39 jurisdictions in the most populous counties of the Nation.
Abstract
Changes incorporated in Phase III of the project were a direct result of the lessons learned from Phase II, with the goal of achieving a more accurate and representative data base on pretrial case processing. Significant changes were made in site selection, defendant sampling, site personnel training, and targeted charge (felony defendants only). The data analysis addresses sample characteristics, pretrial release/detention decisions, court appearances and rearrest, adjudication and sentencing, and event intervals. Data on event intervals cover time from arrest to pretrial release, pretrial release to failure-to-appear (FTA), FTA to return, pretrial release to rearrest offense, rearrest offense to rerelease, arrest to adjudication, adjudication to sentencing, and arrest to sentencing. Appended data-collection form, Phase III sampling and weighting, crime category definitions, and data entry and analysis notes
