This paper presents the results of an economic analysis of criminality in France for the years 1984 to 1987 and focuses on the monetary estimation of the extent of each form of crime as well as the types of control and punishment.
Abstract
A monetary assessment of various types of crime provides a hierarchical estimation of the money involved for each type of offense. White collar crime, specifically fiscal crimes were the most costly. Attempts on human life ranked second with criminal negligence increasing, whereas premeditated murder accounted for only three percent of the total cost of this item. Computer crime is increasing rapidly since for its first listing it ranked seventh. The cost of theft did not change since 1979 and ranked eighth. Cost of holdups was marginal with only a rank of fourteenth. Information is also provided for the cost of punishment, cost of prevention, and cost to private citizens for protection. This economic analysis provides a different method of quantification than police of judiciary statistics. 2 tables
