The guidelines are intended for use by managers of jails lacking automated systems, using outdated systems, using partially automated systems, and currently automating their systems. Individual sections explain methods of communicating the jail's automation needs to data processing personnel, the benefits and requirements for sharing information, and ways of identifying the unique characteristics of a jail's daily operations. The text also considers the use of microcomputers, minicomputers, and mainframes; decisionmaking regarding what areas to automate; and methods of generating support from upper management. Further sections explain the processes involved in developing, implementing, and maintaining a jail automation system, with emphasis on the purposes and products of each process. Checklists and appended glossary, flow charts, chart showing automation in each California county, and list of contact persons in each sheriff's department.
