Data show 1988 juvenile offenses at 193,206, an increase of 6,014 or 3.2 percent over 1987. There were more larcenies and less felonies and violent crimes. Although offenses by boys decreased from 1987, offenses by girls increased 17.6 percent. There were more offenses by juveniles aged 15 and 16. There was a small decrease in the number of school-violence cases. Police juvenile delinquency prevention activities include maintaining contact with the parents or guardians of delinquents and conducting an analysis of background factors likely to influence delinquent behavior. Police report to appropriate juvenile agencies and recommend how to manage the delinquent so as to prevent recidivism. The police maintain a juvenile counseling desk that refers juveniles to appropriate counseling resources. Some 56,900 volunteer juvenile guidance counselors provide advice and guidance for at-risk juveniles. Police also designate pilot areas having a high risk for juvenile delinquency, so police resources may be appropriately intensified in those areas. 26 tables
