This training module provides Canadian correctional staff with the knowledge to be competent, reliable witnesses when giving evidence in a disciplinary court within the institution.
Abstract
The module begins with an overview of the role of witnesses in the courtroom and the relationship of witness' testimony to the charges under examination. The various types of evidence are described within the context of helping staff compose their facts for presentation. Guidelines are provided for professional deportment when giving testimony, and trainees are introduced to tactics used in cross-examination. At the completion of the module, trainees will understand the importance of testimony within the judicial process and be able to differentiate among various types of evidence. They will also be able to prepare reliable testimony for presentation in court, understand the elements of professional conduct in a courtroom, and anticipate what to expect under cross-examination. The outline for each topic in the module provides instructions and material for the trainer including questions for the trainees and lecture content. Approximate time for covering each topic, materials required, and reference materials are also included.
