Literature on the incidence, causes, prevention, and treatment of wife abuse and other forms of domestic violence is reviewed with emphasis on its implications for application in the correctional system of Canada.
Abstract
The discussion excludes incest offenders. Although cultural factors influence definitions, general agreement exists on the basic definitions of physical and psychological abuse, neglect, and financial abuse. In Canada in 1985, 40 percent of homicides resulted from family quarrels, and 14 percent of assaults against males and 37 percent of nonsexual assaults against females took place in the victims' homes or in the homes of friends and acquaintances. Family violence causes include individual, structural, and environmental factors. To treat and prevent domestic violence, corrections decisionmakers should provide programs in family life education, anger management, communication, alternatives to violence in relationships, awareness of sex roles, parenting training, values discussions, and preparation for release. Service planning must begin at the time of admission and should aim to identify, strengthen, and preserve the offender's significant relationships. Tables and 113 references
