The three categories of adult correctional facilities are correctional institutions for adults, correctional centers for adults, and community residential centers for adults. Educational and vocational programs for residents are the responsibility of the Bureau of Education and Employment within the Division of Program Services of the Department of Corrections. At the end of 1989, more than two-thirds of both male and female inmates were under 35 years of age, and the largest age category is 25 to 29 years. Nearly half of the inmates had not achieved a high school diploma. More than half had moderate or serious educational needs, and more than three-quarters had moderate or serious vocational needs. Nine types of academic and vocational programs are available, including Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency Diploma Program, College Correspondence, and study release.
