Xerox El Segundo has more than 5,000 employees and consists of 14 buildings located on 24 acres in southwest Los Angeles County. Earthquakes, fires, explosions, chemical spills, floods, air disasters, and combinations of these emergencies could be disastrous to the facility's operations. These operations include printer, computer, copier, and microchip manufacturing; research and design; engineering; offices; and warehousing. In 1985 management established an emergency task team to develop a comprehensive emergency plan. The plan addresses all possible natural disasters and technological situations and allows a wide range of emergency responses. Options include decentralized coordination and direction, centralized coordination and decentralized direction, and centralized coordination and direction. Each staff member of the emergency operations center also has two alternates to ensure full coverage at all times. Each employee has received a handbook containing maps, phone numbers, and guidelines for action in emergencies. Simulations are also used as training exercises.
