A review of adolescent chemical dependence weekly case conferences was conducted to determine areas of knowledge gaps in the certified chemical dependence counselors and trainees toward adolescents who had suffered child abuse. The adolescents in question were on an adolescent chemical dependence 8-week inpatient unit.
Abstract
Informational and therapeutic gaps were discovered in the areas of abuse and neurological impairment, abuse generational lines, abuse defenses, abuse psychopathology, and abuse law reporting comprehension. The case conference recommended teaching careful pregnancy, birth, and developmental history taking to certified alcohol and drug counselors. Clarification and interpretation of anger and sadness were taught, and countertransference definition was discussed to enable counselors to empathize with their client's history. The importance of abuse reporting was discussed and a review of abuse reporting laws begun. Finally, workers were instructed in the concept of neurological impulsivity and dangerousness in consultation sessions, and the role of admission assessment was reviewed to allow appropriate referral to dual diagnosis facilities. 16 references (Author abstract modified)
