State government departments have representation on the committee in the areas of education, employment, family services, Aboriginal and Islander affairs, health, housing, and corrective services. The committee's responsibility is to deal with issues of concern regarding youth matters. A Working Party on Juvenile Offending has been established to combat youth crime in Queensland. This Working Party has determined that youth at risk need more attention, that responses to social problems need to be designed in relation to social realities, and that the Inter-Departmental Committee should promote more cooperation and information sharing. A complete approach to the issues of juvenile offending is outlined that incorporates individual control, individual guidance and assistance, family and community support and development, and advocacy and public awareness. The Working Party has adopted three goals: research the motivating factors in juvenile offending, increase community awareness of juvenile offending, and introduce programs that will take a preventive approach to juvenile offending behavior. The Bonnemaison strategy for evaluating and preventing juvenile offending is described.
