Security innovations have occurred in the aviation industry in response to a dramatically changed air traffic threat from hijacking to bombings and explosives.
Abstract
New innovations in the security arena include computerized access controls, video badging, fiber optics, bar coding, and biometrics for personal identification. Airlines now promote security in their advertisements more strongly than convenient schedules, reduced fares, and other competitive frills. Security measures at airports have recently been at the highest level in the history of civil aviation. In examining airport, aircraft, and airline security in detail, the book first covers attacks against air traffic (hijacking and terrorism) and such aspects of aircraft security as predeparture screening, metal detectors, x-ray inspection, explosives detection, weapons and other restricted articles, prisoners, and bomb threats. A section on airport security deals with perimeter security and lighting, terminal and ramp security, law enforcement, communications, contingency planning, and general aviation security. A section on airline security discusses investigation management, ticket fraud, ticket stock security, credit card fraud, baggage handling and security, and misappropriation. The final section examines air freight security and specifically considers air cargo security problems, physical security in freight terminals, security procedures for air cargo handling, high-value shipments, cargo security and theft investigations, and control by audit and survey. A list of significant aviation security incidents from 1972 to 1989 is appended. Footnotes and tables
