These recommendations consider two distinct types of polygraph testing, namely, periodic and disclosure examinations. Early research indicates that periodic tests, which are administered approximately every 6 months at the request of the court, the probation officer, or the therapist, are both valid and an effective deterrent. In addition to the therapeutic value of disclosure testing, it also allows for the identification of those children who have been victims so that treatment can be initiated. In two days of hearings on the use of polygraphy in the supervision and treatment of sex abusers following the findings of the Governor's Advisory Committee, the Polygraphy Licensing Board identified nine significant advantages for the use of polygraphy with sexual abusers.
