This book is designed to assist groups or individuals in Texas who are interested in establishing drug prevention programs. It discusses the social consequences, economic loss, health effects, and impact on family relationships of substance abuse as well as offering specific steps that can be taken to organize and implement successful prevention programs.
Abstract
The introductory chapters offer an overview of the extent of alcohol and drug abuse nationwide and in Texas; describe the classification and effects of alcohol and other drugs; and outline the legal, social, and medical consequences of substance abuse. Levels and strategies of prevention programs are examined, and examples of prevention efforts described including, inter alia, parent-peer groups, court-watching, school programs, "youth in action" programs, and employee assistance programs. A series of chapters discuss the steps needed to implement a drug prevention program including needs assessment, problem definition and goals clarification, strategic planning, evaluation design, networking, volunteer recruitment, fundraising, and media support. 3 appendixes
