This report presents data on criminal justice spending throughout New York State for fiscal years 1985-88 for all county, city, town, and village governments.
Abstract
Expenditures by State agencies that deal with criminal justice matters are also reported. Information on the number of personnel employed by the State and by localities for selected criminal justice activities are reported where available. Criminal justice expenditure data are reported for several functional areas; these include police, sheriff, adult and juvenile corrections, probation, the courts, prosecution, and defense for both State and local governments. A "miscellaneous" category has been added to capture the local spending. Additional sources of State spending include Division of Parole, Crime Victims Board, Division for Youth, and the Division of Criminal Justice Services. A general description of each function is followed by a discussion of the service provided and its cost to the public. A comprehensive breakdown of functional expenditures by each level of government is provided in tabular form in the appendixes. Overall, the State and local governments reported criminal-justice spending of over $7.4 billion in 1988, a 52.2-percent increase from 1984. The average annual growth in statewide spending from 1984 to 1988 was 13.1 percent.
