Abstract
Supporters argue that a waiting period and background check prior to gun purchase are desirable. One argues that handguns and assault weapons should be banned from private individuals except for police and weapons collectors, with special provisions for target shooters at registered ranges. Opponents argue that citizens should be taught to determine their own fate and that the Constitution guarantees citizens the right to bear arms. They support more stringent penalties for offenders convicted of a crime involving firearms and assert that recent legislation will not improve crime control. Photographs
